A friend of mine told me once about what she called passive vocabulary. If you’re learning a second language then you are most likely familiar with that. Passive vocabulary is a vocabulary of words you generally don’t use during conversations and rarely use during writing. You can understand, however, when you hear or read these words. The more you read, generally speaking, the bigger your passive vocabulary would be. But let me clarify a thing or two over here.

Anxiety can affect your communication skills, limiting your active vocabulary and result in lots of complications—even depression. I see anxiety like a loop: due to your anxiety you feel anxious (duh) and that leads to more anxiety. Well...you got my point.

But how would you move from that passive stage to active? Being honest? I have no idea. (Seriously. If you do, I need advice.) People tend to write about something they actually can’t deal with. So hypothetically speaking, by reading more and trying to get your self-confidence back (or just get it) then maybe this barrier of passive and active vocabularies would disappear. Who knows? There is nothing to lose if you just try. In fact, reading is a big MUST—I don’t really have to explain why—and self-confidence? Well, you know. Being confident is basically equivalent to success.
